Canelo: Mayweather is who I want next

IMG_1734(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Dan Ambrose: The 172 lb. WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) is still calling out 147 lb. welterweight Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) for him to face him on September 14th, which is the Mexican Independence Day. Mayweather fights at right at 147-150 for his fights, sow why should be fight a guy like Canelo who comes into his fights weighing over 170 lbs?

If Mayweather were to take that fight he’d be out-weighed by 25 lbs. Some of Canelo’s boxing fans think 25 pounds is nothing that Mayweather should take the fight anyway if he’s a courageous fighter.

Canelo said to the LA Times “How many times do I have to say it? Mayweather is who I want.”

Why should Mayweather agree to fight someone that is 25 pounds heavier than him? Until we see Canelo fight someone really, really good that is 25 pounds heavier than him at cruiserweight then why should Mayweather agree to fight him?

We’ve not yet seen Canelo agree to fight an opponent in the middleweight, super middleweight or better yet the cruiserweight divisions. Look at it this way. Would Canelo agree to fight someone that was 25 pounds heavier than him? That would put Canelo in the ring with cruiserweight Marco Huck or Denis Lebedev if he were to fight someone 25 pounds heavier than him.

Since Canelo and his promoters would never agree to let Canelo fight Lebedev and/or Huck because they would be far too strong and heavy for him, then why should Mayweather fight a guy that’s 25 pounds heavier than him in Canelo? I’m sure this logic will be lost on some of Canelo’s loyal boxing fans, but honestly it amounts to being the same thing.

If you’re asking Mayweather to fight someone that is 25 pounds heavier than him then why isn’t Canelo fighting someone 25 pounds heavier than himself to lead by example? I’d be happy just to see Canelo fight a middleweight like Gennedy Golovkin, Sergio Martinez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or a super middleweight like Andre Ward. Canelo weighs more than Martinez and Golovkin when he fights at junior middleweight, and he weighs about the same as Andre Ward at super middleweight.
