By Jim Dower: In a fight that should never have been made in the first place, WBA/WBO/WBC female welterweight Cecilia Braekhus (22-0, 6 KO’s) stopped a badly over-matched Mia St John (47-13-2, 18 KO’s) in the 3rd round on Saturday night at the Arena Nord, Frederikshavn, Denmark. Braekhus, 31, hurt the 45-year-old St. John with a hard right uppercut in the third round that had St. John out on her feet.

Surprisingly the referee allowed the fight to continue. Braekhus then teed off on St. John with punch after punch until the referee stepped in and halted the fight after Braekhus hit St. John with a shot that knocked her backwards several feet. St. John was staggering at the time of the stoppage.

St. John looked like she didn’t belong in the same ring with Braekhus right off the bat, as she was taking big punches and just trying to move and cover up. St. John didn’t have the speed or the power the compete and it was a purely defensive posture from her. Compared to some of the fighters that Braekhus has been fighting recently, this was a big step down for her. St. John came into the fight having lost three out of her last five fights and you have to wonder how or why the sanctioning bodies let this fight count for a title defense. It should have been more of an exhibition sparring fight because St. John was way out of her class.
