Bellew doesn’t want Ajisafe fight; prefers Chilemba or Karo Murat on May 25th

bellew2By Scott Gilfoid: WBC Silver and British light heavyweight champion Tony Bellew (19-1-1, 12 KO’s) says he doesn’t want to defend his British 175 pound strap on May 25th against Bob Ajisafe (11-2, 3 KO’s), who Bellew already beat by a convincing 12 round unanimous decision three years ago in September 2010 and instead Bellew wants to face #3 WBC Isaac Chilemba (20-1-1, 9 KO’s) in a rematch or #2 IBF, #10 WBO Karo Murat on the 5/25 card at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Bellew and Chilemba fought to a 12 round draw last Saturday night in a fight where many boxing fans felt that Chilemba won. Bellew maintains that he should have won the fight, and that the only reason the fight was close is because he says he let off the gas in the 6th or 7th rounds.

It’s still hard to say why Bellew couldn’t put his foot back on the gas to win the fight if he says the only reason Chilemba came back was because he let up on him. It sounds like Bellew can’t come to terms with the fact that Chilemba simply was the better fighter and that he didn’t have any answers for Chilemba’s talent advantage.

Bellew says if he can get a rematch against Chilemba he’s going to step on the gas from the 1st round and keep his foot on the gas for as long as it takes to get the win. Bellew figures he’ll KO Chilemba next time around.

How Bellew figures on doing that when he couldn’t hit the side of a barn with his punches in the real question. All Bellew was doing was missing, looking silly, and tiring himself out by swinging like a rank amateur against Chilemba. It just looked like Bellew had taken too big of a jump up in class and he couldn’t handle it.

It’s unclear if Chilemba will be ready to get back in the ring in May to fight Bellew on the 25th of that month Carl Froch vs. Mikkel Kessler card. If not, then Bellew may have to settle for Murat or more likely a rematch against Ajisafe.
