Audley: I’m going to take Deontay Wilder into the deep rounds

audley65By Scott Gilfoid: British heavyweight Audley Harrison (31-6, 23 KO’s) revealed Sky Sports what his game plan is for his fight tonight against the talented American heavyweight Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, UK. Audley’s plan is a simple one.

Audley says he’s going to take Deontay into the later rounds of the fight to take advantage of the fact that he’s never been past the 4th round to try and wear him down. Sounds like a plan put together without much thought.

Audley said “Deontay has never been in the later rounds, and it’s my job to take him there. My mojo is back.”

I think that’s a crummy plan and now that I know that’s all Audley has up his sleeves, I can expertly predict that he’s going to get knocked out early tonight. Audley’s only REAL chance of winning the fight is to put his foot on the accelerator and try and score a quick knockout before the 27-year-old Deontay has had a chance to warm up his big right hand cannon.

If Audley can’t take Deontay by surprise then he’s going to get mowed down like a blade of grass. Running won’t help. Deontay will simply cut off the ring on the 41-year-old Audley and land a right hand shot thrown from a mile away. Deontay has such a long reach that when you think you’re out of range of his shots, you’re really not. You’re actually still within his reach and he’s going to connect with his big right hand to blast you out.

I hope for Audley’s sake he doesn’t waste his chance by running because it won’t look good him running in front of his British boxing fans and still getting knocked out. It’s better to go all out and finish on the canvas after giving a nice effort.

Deontay said “I’m looking for a knockout come Saturday night.”

I do see Audley trying to extend the fight for as long as possible by fighting negatively by running, clinching and holding, but it’s not going to be any good.

I know Audley’s loyal fans think he’s better off running and not exchanging with Deontay in hopes he’ll tire out later in the rounds. Like I said, that’s a sad plan because Deontay is used to sparring for 15 rounds continuously and he still has wicked power even late in the sparring sessions. Wilder is not someone that loses his power when he gets into the deeper rounds. What this means is that even if Audley were able to run for most of the fight, he’s still going to be in for a world of hurt when he tries to make a fight of it in the 10th round.

The fight is only scheduled for 10 rounds, so if Audley is comfortable with giving away the first 9 rounds of the fight to Deontay, then that’s on him. Personally, I think it’s stupid as heck and a loser’s game plan. You don’t fight like that when you’re trying to win a fight because basically Audley is saying he’s only going to try and win the fight by a knockout in the 10th. Fat chance that happens.

If the 41-year-old Audley suddenly stops running in the 10th and tries to actually fight Deontay, he’s going to get knocked out within the first 30 seconds of the 10th when he walks into one of Deontay’s huge right hands.
