By Scott Gilfoid: It seems like former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) is being put on easy street lately. First it was his promoters at Golden Boy having him face 2nd tier fighter Julio Diaz in the light welterweight tournament, while the other tournament fighters Zab Judah, Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse and Lamont Peterson have to pick each other off to get to the finals to face what will likely be Khan.
And now the World Boxing Council has suddenly ranked Khan at #2 at 147 despite the fact that Khan has never fought in the welterweight division before. It seems that the WBC is doing it’s best to try and make it so that a fight between Khan and WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. will happen in 2013 or 2014.
What’s troubling about this move is that Khan has lost two out his last three fights, and that alone would seem to be enough for him to be ranked anywhere near the top five in any division, especially at 147. But the real sad part is for the fighters that are currently ranked in the top 15 by the WBC at 147.
It doesn’t see fair at all for those guys to have the WBC push them down and elevate Khan he’s not anything to deserve a #2 ranking in the welterweight division.
The WBC seems to be rewarding Khan for failure because his empty win over the non-top ranked Carlos Molina shouldn’t been the deciding factor in the WBC ranking Khan at #2.
It’s pretty sad when you’ve got a sanctioning body like the WBC giving guys high rankings when they don’t deserve it. The sport becomes more of a popularity contest when you’ve got sanctioning bodies ranking guys more so based on their popularity rather than what they’ve actually done in the ring. The sport becomes like professional wrestling when you have guys getting inflated rankings when they’ve done nothing to deserve it. Like I said, Khan has lost two out of his last three fights and he’s the last person that should be ranked #2 by the WBC.
