Wilder’s trainer to De La Hoya: Let’s make Deontay vs. Tony Thompson

wilder777By Scott Gilfoid: Jay Deas, the trainer for the talented unbeaten heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) wants Golden Boy Promotions to set up a fight between the unbeaten Wilder and #11 IBF Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) so that Wilder can show off his stuff for the American boxing public as well the world. Thompson destroyed the UK’s best heavyweight in David Price by a 2nd round knockout last Saturday night in Liverpool, England.

Deas said to Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya “What’s up @OscarDeLaHoya and @BronzeBomber? D’s coach here. Let’s make that big American Showdown happen. You know..TT [Tony Thompson] vs. DW [Deontay Wilder].”

I would love to see this fight. Wilder, #9 WBA, would get a chance to show how much better he is than Price by showing his power off against Thompson. I honestly can’t see Thompson being able to take more than one round of Wilder’s right hand bombs without kissing the canvas and not being able to get up.

Thompson, 41, is too slow and he’d be right there for Wilder to tee off on him with his sledgehammer right hands. It wouldn’t take more than one or two big right hand bombs from Wilder to splay Thompson out on the canvas for the count of 10.

I have a feeling Golden Boy won’t be able to make this fight unless they throw a lot of money at Thompson because Price wants a rematch with Thompson, and Tyson Fury also wants to face Thompson in 2013. Golden Boy would have to be willing to give Thompson more money than those guys would, and I doubt that Golden Boy will want to get into a situation where they have to pay Thompson more money than what he’s worth.

I mean, Thompson beat Price, but that’s no big deal because Price had already been exposed as having a glass jaw from his amateur days. It’s not worth it then for Golden Boy to overpay for a Thompson fight when he doesn’t done anything to make it worthwhile to throw a bunch of money at him for Wilder to destroy him in one or two rounds.
