By Steven Ocallaghan: If the rumors are true, then it looks like we will have an interesting match up between the American prospect Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 kO’s) and a resurgent 2-time Prizefighter champ Audley Harrison (31-6, 23 KO’s) on April 27th at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.
It’s an interesting match-up as the 2 heavy’s had some good sparring last year in the run up to Audley’s fight with David Price. Both guys have got KO power, are big with a very long reach.
Deontay at 27-years-old has a perfect 27-0 with all by KO. Ok some of his opponents have been questionable but you have to respect the fact that he has stopped all before him.
Wilder has now been a pro for almost 4 and a half years now and on his pro debut weighed only 207lbs, in contrast to Audley weighing 260 on his debut in 2001 coming straight off his Olympic gold medal.
Experience wise Audley has it in abundance compared to Deontay , but since turning pro, when it mattered he has seamed to freeze when you look at the David Haye and David Price fights. He was saying on Ringside a few weeks ago that he has now got rid of all his demons, but we have heard it before.
I must admit, the last Prizefighter win for Audley was quite impressive as it was all or bust and he did come through it well and at 41 and weighing just 237lbs was looking the best, sharpest and quickest I have seen him.
The intriguing thing about this fight, leaving all previous opponents behind them is that they both have been in the ring with each other. There are rumours Audley floored Deontay. Rumors, true or not but both guys wouldn’t take the fight unless they thought they could win.
Last week I had the pleasure of having about 20 minutes of Deontay’s time where he is very respectful of all fighters out there but in the same way confident of his own ability. He also sparred with David Haye a couple of years ago and I know David was very impressed. The road he is hoping to go down is the Alexander Povetkin 25-0 with 17kos route. A route I think he more than capable of succeeding.
Povetkin at 6’2″ is a route that the winner of this fight should take as I think he is far more beatable than any of the K brothers.
This is a great matchup. I know people will talk about how old Audley is , but right now he is head and shoulders above where he was 4,5 or 6 years ago. Both are Olympic medalists wich shows there is a lot of talent between these two guys also . I think Deontay will win this fight, it could be a 1 round KO or it could go deep depending on which Audley turns up.
If the fight does go into the second half it could get interesting as Deontay has never been past 4 rounds where as Audley has previous for some longer fights but at 6’7″ and weighing a fit 225 I think Wilder should cope.
I fight I’m looking forward to and a fight I think Wilder will win, which way is anybody’s clue but I see Wilder with his arm raised at the end.
