By Mister Jackson: Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero’s boxing record is 31-1-1, sounds very impressive to me and most when looking at the numbers, right? Well, only two of the fights on his record are at welterweight, Guerrero has defeated Andre Berto and Selcuk Aydin.
Guerrero should be given credit for facing the challenge of fighting in a higher weight class, because we have all seen other fighters fail when moving up in weight. Considering the fact that Guerrero jumped up two weight classes and only had two welterweight fights, one has to question how the rankings are handled.
Guerrero is currently ranked number 4 after Timothy Bradley’s win last night over Ruslan Provodnikov, and is scheduled to fight the current number 1 ranked welterweight. There are a number of fighters that have more experience in the welterweight division. I ask myself how would Guerrero fair against the likes of Keith Thurman, Josesito Lopez, Mike Jones, Kell Brook, or Devon Alexander. It seems Guerrero cut the line to get to the front. Has Guerrero done enough to be ranked number 4 in the welterweight division?
Shouldn’t the fighters who have been more active in the welterweight class have a shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr. before a guy that has only faced two welterweights? Is the point system flawed or did Guerrero and management select the proper ranked fighters that seem to be in the declining stages of their careers?
On May 4, 2013 Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero has an opportunity to face arguably the best welterweight over the last 15 years in the squared circle. Will Guerrero be outclassed or does he have what it takes to beat Mayweather? We will all see if Guerrero’s leap to the front of the line was wise or foolish.
