wilder5By Scott Gilfoid: If Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer gets his way he’ll be looking to match his talented undefeated heavyweight Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) against #9 IBF Tony Thompson (37-3, 25 KO’s) in a fight that would be televised on CBS so that more American boxing fans can see the 6’7” Wilder, according to ESPN.

With his fights limited to the premium channel Showtime, it keeps a lot of American fans from getting a glimpse of the young knockout talent, but Schaefer would like to change that if possible so that more fans can see Wilder in action.

WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. will have his upcoming May 4th fight against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero heavily advertised on CBS, and this no doubt is going to bring in a lot of American fans to see the fight on Showtime/CBS pay-per-view on May 4th. If Floyd can have visibility on CBS, then Wilder needs to have it as well because he’s the future of the heavyweight division, and clearly a star in the making.

Schaefer said to the New York Fight Blog at ESPN, “We want to expose boxing to sports fans who haven’t really watched boxing.”

That is very smart. If Schaefer and Golden Boy Promotions can have Wilder’s fights televised on CBS in front for of casual boxing fans that have never seen the talented Wilder before, then he can possibly turn him into a pay-per-view star like Mike Tyson if can get Wilder the right fights.

Thompson would be an excellent start for Deontay because it would allow boxing fans in the U.S to see how powerful Wilder is with him going up against a guy that fought IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko twice, and has a ton of experience.

If Schaefer wants to get Thompson to face Wilder next then he’s going to have to give him a better off than then one that he may be getting from David Price’s promoter. Thompson knocked Price out in the 2nd round last month on February 23rd, and Price and his promoter want a rematch with him. Golden Boy has really deep pockets, so it shouldn’t be any problem for them to offer more money than what Price’s promoter can offer.

Having Wilder face Thompson will give boxing fans a good gauge of how much better Wilder is compared to British heavyweight David Price, who before getting destroyed by Thompson he was considered to be one of the top heavyweight contenders/prospects in the sport.
