Scenario not so farfetched…..

broner3By James Le Blanc IV: What if I asked you who you thought would win out of a fight between big brother Floyd Mayweather and little brother Adrien Broner? We haven’t even considered this being a possibility but as I look at the landscape of what’s been going on for both Mayweather and Broner, I’m not so sure this is a farfetched scenario. Let’s start with Floyd Mayweather’s landscape.

He just signed a 6 fight deal with Showtime with no clear opponent for September (If you remember Floyd has committed to a date in September and the opponent apparently will not be the presumed Canelo Alvarez). Other than Canelo there are a few names being thrown out there. We know it will not be Pacqauio who must avenge his losses and even when he does the Top Rank and Golden Boy feud will not allow that to happen.

We know it will not be the surging Juan Marquez who already faced Mayweather a few years ago and lost by a landslide. The top 10 Welterweights have been busy beating each other up and no clear opponent really stands out to face Floyd next.

Now let’s take a look at Broner’s landscape. He can’t get that unification bout with Ricky Burns because Burns doesn’t want to lose his belt. He can’t get a fight with Gamboa because no one knows what’s going on with him and he can’t get a fight with Brandon Rios because of their promoter feud.  So Golden Boy offers Broner a much undeserved title bout against Paulie Malignaggi for his WBA welterweight belt. Now the last time someone jumped over the junior welterweight division into the welterweight division it was Robert Guerrero.  Guerrero earned his shot at Floyd by facing a highly avoided opponent in Selcuk Aydin for the WBC interim belt.

Guerrero retained that belt by pummeling Andre Berto so having fought two top welterweights in the fashion that he did, Guerrero earned his shot at WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather. This is not the case with Broner. But if he agrees to fight Paulie which is a fight that Paulie is open to and believes is an interesting matchup, I have no doubt in my mind that Broner would win.

This could happen as soon as June making Adrien Broner a  WBA welterweight champion joining WBO Timothy Bradley, IBF Devon Alexander, and WBC Floyd Mayweather….now are you seeing where I’m going with this?  Now how long before fans become intrigued by this possible match up if both fighters do well through 2013.  There wouldn’t be any promotional feuds holding this fight from happening, all it would take is a little demand from the fans and someone like Oscar whispering in Broner’s ear, “You can take him.”

For people that may say I’m a fool and this would never happen, consider the fact that we have discussed Mayweather vs Pacqiauo for over 3 years and still talking about it…a fight that will never happen. To me this is more realistic.  I’m not saying that you have to predict who would win now, I’m just making you aware that this scenario will be in our distant future if Broner decides to jump through the hoop that Golden Boy has provided and enter the welterweight class this June.
