Rios: Broner’s trying to get me to lose focus on Alvarado

rios454By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) thinks WBC lightweight champion and soon to be WBA welterweight champ Adrien Broner is trying to get him to lose concentration for his rematch this Saturday night against Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) by trash talking about him in the media.

Rios said to the boxingchannel.com: “[He’s] talking s***, but the fights never going to happen because he’s with Golden Boy, and I’m with Top Rank. I think he’s trying to get me to lose focus on Mike Alvarado so he can say ‘I told you, Brandon ain’t s***; he can’t touch me.’”

It’s not likely that Broner is as devious as that. It’s more likely that Broner is simply mentioning Rios’ name because people ask him what he thinks of him, and of course Broner being Broner, he’s going to tell the truth. He’s seen Rios’s fights, and he saw his fight with Richard Abril where Rios won a questionable decision.

It’s almost impossible to see Rios-Abril without walking away from the experience seeing Rios as a flawed fighter and one that’s incredibly lucky to have not been given a 12 round decision loss by wide scores. Broner isn’t worried about Rios because he doesn’t see anything in his fighting style that worries him.

Rios-Alvarado will be fighting this Saturday night on HBO at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

There’s a good chance that Rios will win the fight, but there’s also a great chance that he either could lose to Alvarado or look really bad in winning like he did last year in April when he defeated Abril by a controversial decision.

You can bet that Broner will be saying he told you so if Rios fails to look good in the fight. Rios is going to have to really shine if he doesn’t want Broner to be gloating afterwards about how poor he looked.
