bey5By Allan Fox: Unbeaten lightweight Mickey Bey Jr. (18-0-1, 10 KO’s) received a mere slap on the hands by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for Bey testing positive for testosterone for his fight last month against Robert Rodriguez on February 2nd in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Bey Jr. knocked Rodriguez out in the 3rd round with an impressive looking left hook to the head. The Nevada Commission reportedly voted 3-2 to fine Bey Jr. $1000 and suspend him three months. The $1000 comes out of Bey Jr’s $8000 purse for the fight.

In contrast, former WBC junior middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was fined $900,000 out of a $3 million purse for testing positive for marijuana for his fight last September and given a 9 month suspension. However, it was Chavez Jr’s second time he had tested positive for a banned drug.

The Nevada Commission also reversed the KO result and changed it to a no decision, which means that Bey Jr. is no longer 19-0. According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, Bey Jr. had high concentration of testosterone in his blood of 30-1 instead of the normal 6-1 ratio that people normally have. It was the “second highest ever in Nevada,” said Keith Kizer from the Nevada Commission. That’s a pretty high ratio to be facing such an average opponent.

Bey Jr. hasn’t been active lately, and now this is going to slow his career down even further. Bey Jr. has looked good in all of his fights, but for some reason he’s just not fighting often enough to move his career forward. At 29, Bey Jr. is going to need to start fighting a little more often if he wants to get a title shot before he starts to decline as a fighter in terms of his physical skills. He’s got the power and the speed going for him, but just needs more fights.
