mattysse4332By Allan Fox: According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, the huge match-up between IBF light welterweight champion Lamont Peterson (31-1-1, 16 KO’s) and Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31 KO’s) is official for May 18th at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

The fight, which will be televised on Showtime, will also be paired with the IBF welterweight match-up between IBF champion Devon Alexander and challenger Kell Brook.

Schaefer told RingTV “Peterson is in. He wants the fight, and so does Lucas Matthysse.”

It’s no mystery that these two guys were going to fight because it’s part of Golden Boy’s four-fighter tournament to get to Amir Khan in the finals in December, but now it’s official with Peterson saying he wants in. Peterson signed up with Golden Boy Promotions recently specifically because he wanted to be able to fight the likes of Khan, Danny Garcia, and Lucas Mattysse. Now he has his wish.

Peterson is going to need to make some changes in his fighting style if he doesn’t want to end up getting hurt by Mattysse because in his draw with Victor Ortiz and his loss to Tim Bradley, Peterson was hurt by big shots he took in those fights. Ortiz, who I don’t consider to be as powerful as Matthysse, put Peterson down twice in their fight. Even the light hitting Bradley dropped Peterson in the 3rd round, and hurt him at least three times in the fight with hard head shots.

Peterson has the reach and the jab to control the fight against Matthysse as long as he stays focused at keeping the fight at range. However, Matthysse is good at timing jabs, and he’s quick enough to get under the shots to land his big power punches. Peterson won’t necessarily be safe just because he’s jabbing and staying away from Matthysse. He’s going to have to be able to take some healthy shots if he wants to win this fight.
