Malignaggi to Broner: Shut up and sign the contract

malig434By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) seems to be concerned whether WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) is having second thoughts about facing him after hearing rumors that Broner wasn’t excited about the idea of having to face Malignaggi in New York in front of what could be a packed house full of Malignaggi’s fans on June 22nd at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Malignaggi said to RingTV “Stop b****** and sign the contract…let’s do it. Now, I’m hyped.”

Malignaggi is excited after Broner fired back with some trash talk to RingTV where he said he’s going to KO Malignaggi and leave him on the canvas. To Malignaggi, this makes him realize that Broner is serious about wanting to face him, and will likely go through with the fight despite Broner having to move up two weight classes to fight at welterweight.

Most boxing fans are seeing this as a mismatch already with few fans giving the older, slower, weaker, and slightly larger Malignaggi much of a chance to win the fight. In fairness to Malignaggi, he does have a chance to win the fight if he can stay on the move and peck away at Broner with jabs. That’s about all Malignaggi can do because if he tries to push the fight to Broner he’ll get hit with something big and taken out.

By the same token if Malignaggi stands in one place for 12 rounds like Antonio DeMarco did in his fight with Broner then he’ll get blasted out that way as well. Malignaggi doesn’t have the power to gain Broner’s respect the way someone like welterweight Keith Thurman would.

For this reason Malignaggi is going to have to stay on the move constantly to avoid Broner’s shots. The good news is that Broner doesn’t move very well on his feet, and that he’s not really a perfect Floyd Mayweather imitation. The bad news is Malignaggi might be too old to move for 12 rounds like he used to do earlier in his career. In that case I don’t see him winning the fight.
