Kellerman picks Rios to defeat Alvarado on March 30th

alvarado1By Allan Fox: HBO analyst Max Kellerman is picking unbeaten former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) to beat Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) in their rematch this month on March 30th at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino, in Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Kellerman believes their first fight should have been Fight of the Year for 2012 instead of the Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Manny Pacquiao fourth fight.

Kellerman said to HBO “The combustion took place when they [Rios & Alvarado] put their names on the contract. There’s no way these guys can show up and not make a great fight. I don’t care how disciplined Alvarado tries to come out for the rematch; this is how Alvarado is. This is why he’s compelling, this is why we want to watch him because when you hit him once, he wants to hit you back harder twice and Rios is exactly the same way. In terms of historical significance, knockdowns, shift of dimensions, I get why people have Pacquiao-Marquez is the fighter of the year. I prefer this fight as fight of the year. It was sustained brutality. Rios is just the best active fighter. His opponent’s punches, no matter how much they seem to wobble his head and shoulders, they don’t seem to have the same effect on him than his punches on his opponents, and pretty much anyone who wants to come into Rios’ kitchen, I like Rios.”

Kellerman is right; Rios will likely win this fight because he’s able to walk though massive amounts of punishment in order to deliver his own shots. The thing is he can take Alvarado’s best shots for 12 rounds without going down, but Alvarado won’t be able to do the same thing with him.

The only way Alvarado can win this fight is if he boxes and picks his spots to slug it out with Rios. Even then it’s going to be a really tough fight for Alvarado and if he makes one mistake then he’ll be take out like he was last time they fought in October last year.
