Kellerman: People want Mayweather to fight Broner

broner3By Dan Ambrose: HBO TV analyst Max Kellerman says that the number #1 fighter that boxing fans want to see face Floyd Mayweather Jr. is, believe it or not, Adrien Broner. It’s not it’s WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez like many people think it would be given Canelo’s huge popularity.

Kellerman says he gets stopped and gets phone calls from people, and overwhelmingly the fighter they want Mayweather to face is Broner. That makes a lot of sense because Canelo really isn’t well known in the U.S, aside from with hardcore boxing fans. Canelo is more popular among Mexican fans from Mexico, but he’s still building up a fan base in the U. S. Broner seems to be ahead of him in the U.S, and it’s interesting that fans are calling for a Mayweather-Broner fight.

Kellerman said to ESPN, “It’s not too early [to talk about fighting Mayweather]. Adrien Broner just did his highest rating yet on HBO in spite of the fact that the guy [Gavin Rees] he was in there with was as high as an 80-1 underdog. When people see a guy that has got the good, they know it and Adrien Broner has got the goods. Floyd Mayweather has got the greats; he’s got the bad case of the greats, and whether or not Adrien Broner is on that level remains to be seen. But I already get calls and get stopped on the street, and the number one name with Floyd, since Pacquiao lost, is Adrien Broner. If I were Floyd, if this fight were ever to take place, and I doubt it ever will, they’re best friends, I’d take him in the next 18 months; I’d take him before he gets too seasoned, and while Floyd is still at the top of his game. But a year and a half, two years from now, Floyd’s 37, 38-years-old, and Broner’s 25 and in his prime, that’s a bad match-up. I should have called him [Broner] a ‘Problem. He’s a problem for anyone right now, including Floyd. At this point Floyd would be a favorite to beat him, but he’s a problem. Broner is a tremendous fighter, and Floyd’s 36-years-old. In a couple of years, he’s 38-years-old. Eventually, no one goes on winning forever.”

Broner would give Floyd huge headaches if the fight were to be made. However, Mayweather already said he doesn’t want to fight Broner because he sees him as a brother, and the same thing with Broner. He’s essentially cloned Mayweather’s fighting style, and it would be difficult for him to fight a guy that he seems to look up to almost like a hero in some ways.

If they ever do fight, then Mayweather would have to get it over with as soon as possible if he wants to have a chance at winning because if he waits a couple of years until he’s 38, he’ll be too old to beat Broner at that point in his career. By then Broner will have established himself in the welterweight division, and he won’t be overwhelmed by the weight like he might now if the fight were to be made.
