rios7By Allan Fox: HBO will be televising a “Road to Rios-Alvarado 2” countdown show on March 16th in order to attract attention to the Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) vs. Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) rematch scheduled for March 30th on HBO at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

In addition to that, HBO will be doing the same for Nonito Donaire vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux to advertise their April 13th fight, according to Steve Kim.

The Rios-Alvarado fight is sure to be exciting while it lasts, which likely won’t be more than five or six rounds at best. Rios stopped Alvarado in the 7th round last October in a WBO light welterweight title eliminator in Carson, California.

Alvarado seemed to be in control of the fight until getting hurt in the 6th round. Unfortunately for him, Alvarado was unable to recover enough to keep from getting knocked out in the next round.

Rios should be able to stop Alvarado if the two go toe-to-toe like they did last time. Alvarado needs to take a page out of Richard Abril’s playbook by being smart, boxing and tying Rios up whenever he gets in close to avoid getting hit with his uppercuts.

If Alvarado’s chin was a little better than it would be okay for him to slug with Rios, but he showed last time that he’s vulnerable to his power shots, so he’s going to need to be smarter next time if he doesn’t want to get blasted out again.

Bob Arum, the promoter for both Alvarado and Rios, wanted to put the rematch together because of how much attention their fight attracted with boxing fans, and likely because he really doesn’t have a big stable to match them up against other fighters. Arum has Tim Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez, Manny Pacquiao, Khabib Allakhverdiev, Bradley and Rios.

Since he likes to keep everything together within the Top Rank family with his matchmaking, we’re going to see Rios facing Alvarado a number of times, as well as the other guys fighting each other repeatedly.
