Guerrero: I’m going to take the fight to Mayweather

guerrero451By Dan Ambrose: Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) believes he’s got the magic strategy to try and beat undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) on May 4th, and that’s by pressuring him the full 12 rounds to where Mayweather can’t even breath.

It’s not exactly a new strategy because it’s been tried by most of Mayweather’s opponents in the past and they’ve all miserably failed at achieving it, but that’s what Guerrero says he’s going to try and do when he faces Mayweather in front of a sold out MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Guerrero said to Fightnews.com “You’ve got to go in there and execute your game plan, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I’m coming in there to dictate the fight. He ain’t intimidating me, man.”

The fact that Guerrero plans on pressuring Mayweather suggests that Guerrero doesn’t have a lot of faith in his ability to box with the 36-year-old. But one wonders what Guerrero will do when he finds out that his smothering tactics are a fail against Mayweather.

Where’s the plan B, C and D? I just don’t see the 29-year-old Guerrero being a skilled enough and talented enough fighter to shift gears into another plan. In another words, Guerrero will live and die by his decision to pressure Mayweather.

It’s all well and good if it works, which I don’t think it will, but what will Guerrero do when Mayweather starts lighting him up with clean right hands and check left hooks. It could turn out to be an embarrassment just like it did for Victor Ortiz two years ago, and we saw what Ortiz did when he couldn’t handle getting humiliated.

Ortiz chose to head-butt Mayweather in what appeared to some boxing fans as a way for Ortiz to get out of the fight by possibly getting disqualified. So will Guerrero start to foul if he finds out he has no answers for Mayweather’s superior skillset?
