Guerrero: Fans want to see Mayweather lose to me

guerrero54By Chris Williams: Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) may be the underdog for his May 4th fight against boxing’s biggest star in Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s), but Guerrero expects the fans at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, to be showing him more support than the 36-year-old Mayweather when the two square off for this Showtime/CBS pay-per-view bout.

Guerrero told the Mercury News “I expect the crowd to be on my side. There are so many fans who want to see Floyd lose.”

That’s all well and good, but the fans won’t be fighting the bout for Guerrero. They can cheer him, and that no doubt will motivate him to keep walking forward and throwing a lot of punches.

However, if Guerrero is going to fight without defense like he did against the marginal welterweights Selcuk Aydin and Andre Berto, then Guerrero is going to have major problems against Mayweather. It won’t matter if Guerrero is landing at a higher clip, if Mayweather is hitting him cleanly with shots that get the attention of the crowd then there’s no way Guerrero can win.

His connect percentage will be far below Mayweather’s due to his defensive skills, and it’s going to be a case where simply throwing a lot of punches won’t be enough to get the victory. The crowd can motivate Guerrero by giving him more support than Mayweather, but Guerrero has to have more than this if he wants to win.

Guerrero expects Mayweather to trash talk him a little in the lead up to the fight. Guerrero said “Maybe he’ll make fun of my ears…you don’t know what he’ll say.”

Mayweather will no doubt get the better of Guerrero when it comes time to clowning him on the Showtime preview episodes that they’ll be televising to get boxing fans interesting in the fight, but that’s just part of the deal when fighting Mayweather. Hopefully that doesn’t unnerve Guerrero too much because he’s not going to win the trash talking battle against Mayweather.
