Groves to fight on May 25th against a big named opponent

groveswBy Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBO super middleweight contender George Groves (18-0, 14 KO’s) is moving ahead to his May 25th spot on the undercard of the Carl Froch-Mikkel Kessler fight after beating the unknown fighter Baker Barakat earlier tonight by a 2nd round knockout in Magdeburg, Germany. That was Groves’ second easy fight under the guidance of promoter Eddie Hearn. Groves is now supposed to be fighting a well-known fighter on the Froch-Kessler card.

Hearn says he’s getting a big name for Groves to fight on May 25th, but I pretty much see it as Brian Magee and no one else. That’s not a big fight, but I guess it’s a big fight for UK fans just by the virtue of them knowing who Magee is. But as far as Magee being a big name, he’s not. That won’t keep Hearn from trumpeting that Magee is a big name, as if boxing fans will believe him if he says it often enough.

Hearn said this on his twitter after Groves’ win tonight: “Well done @stgeorgegroves roll on May 25 #4fightsin6months #winning.”

Hearn should have said four stiffs in six months because that’s pretty much what it’s been shaping up to be thus far with Groves beating the little known journeyman Barakat tonight, and someone named Dario German Balmaceda in his fight before that in February.

Groves wants to get a title shot against Robert Stieglitz, the new WBO super middleweight champion who beat champion Arthur Abraham by a 4th round TKO tonight in Germany. However, Stieglitz is going to either fight Abraham next or possibly someone like Arthur Abraham. Stieglitz is going to take full advantage of having his WBO title back in his possession. He’s not going to waste time fighting Groves yet before he gets a big money fight against someone else.

Groves also wants to fight Froch, but Froch isn’t keen on fighting him due to all of the soft fights Groves has been taking. Froch said to Sky Sports News “I’m the champion and everyone wants a shot at me. If he deserves it, he’ll get a shot, but don’t worry, he’ll get a pasting.”

I can’t see Hearn letting Groves take a fight with Froch even if it were offered to him. He’s going to keep Groves cruising in the slow lane until he gets a crack at Stieglitz in 2014.
