Golovkin’s victory over Ishida may scare away possible opponents

ishida4By Eric Thomas: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) may have looked too good in defeating Nobuhiro Ishida (24-9-2, 9 KO’s) by a 3rd round knockout last Saturday night at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Golovkin knocked out a guy that had never been knocked out before, and did it in an impressive fashion by flattening Ishida with a single right hand in the 3rd round that left him knocked clean out. It’s not just that punch that had Ishida hurt. He was hurt at the end of the 2nd round when Golovkin nailed him with two huge right hands to the head that had Ishida looking shaken as he walked back to his corner.

There’s little doubt that Golovkin would have finished Ishida off if there had been another 30 seconds left in the round because he was teeing off on him at the time the round ended.

Golovkin wants to fight in June, and the possible opponents mentioned thus far are Brian Vera and Matthew Macklin. Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is also looking at fighting one of those two fighters in June, and he’s got first dibs in picking one of them out due to the deep pockets of his promoters at Top Rank.

Golovkin should be able to get one of those two fighters, but now it might not be possible because I can’t see either guy agreeing to fight him after the way he took apart Ishida. It’s not just Ishida that Golovkin destroyed. He’s made easy work of his last three opponents: Ishida, Gabriel Rosado and Grzegorz Proksa.

There’s been nothing competitive about any of those fights. Some boxing fans think Rosado gave Golovkin problems, but that’s not true. Rosado ran for the first four rounds, and then fought with Golovkin in the 5th and the start of the 6th.

At the start of the 6th, Golovkin hurt Rosado powerful right uppercut, and that put the fight in the shutdown mode with Rosado running for the remainder of that round and then the fight was halted at the start of the 7th by the request from his corner.

It’s likely that Golovkin’s promoter will have to look in another direction for his next fight because I don’t believe Macklin or Vera will say yes to a fight with him in June or ever. They need to look some of the options as a backup plan for when or if one of those two fighters refuse the fight.
