Floyd Mayweather’s talent goes to waste

mayweather533By Mark Calooke: Floyd Mayweather is possibly the most controversial figure of our generation. He has outraged fans in and out of the ring. But no one can deny his talent. I wouldn’t go as far as to say he is really unbeaten because like most fans, I have seen Mayweather lose. But in most of his fights he has been so far above his opponent that its shocking.

For his May 4th fight Mayweather has picked Robert Guerrero. I don’t see anyone that is impressed with this fight. It’s possible that Guerrero is the most one dimensional fighter in the welterweight division. Guerrero isn’t a puncher and hasn’t had a knockout for 3 years. I would have liked to see Mayweather face Cotto again. Mayweather did dominate that fight but Cotto did trouble him at times. That’s what fans want.

The fact is that fights like this have seriously hurt Floyd Mayweather’s reputation. And there has been alot of fights like this. The biggest criticism of Floyd is that he avoids fights. weather that is through greed or fear, it’s unclear, but he does avoid certain fights. he wouldn’t face Cotto until he got older. He completely ignored the wishes of the fans where Mosley was concerned. Again, that fight came years too late. He wouldn’t fight Antonio Margarito, saying he was too big, I agree with Mayweather there. fans wanted a show down with Oscar De La Hoya. After coming years to late the fight was controversial. 2 judges picked Floyd and 1 picked Oscar. I thought that fight should have been a draw. The score cards were a joke.

The good news is that Mayweather has shown no signs of retiring. He may still take the tough fights. i really hope he does. Mayweather was good enough to go down as one of the best champions of the last 20 years. But if he doesn’t step up, it won’t be greatness he is remembered for in 50 years.
