Dirrell vs. Duran: Andre getting back in thick of things on April 12th

dirrell212By Scott Gilfoid: Super middleweight Andre Dirrell (21-1, 14 KO’s) will be making his move towards a world title when he looks to make easy work of Ossie Duran (28-10-2, 11 KO’s) next month on April 12th in the beautiful city of Shelton, Washington.

The fight is scheduled for 10 rounds, but I suspect it won’t last half that long if Dirrell puts the after burners on and looks to smash the 35-year-old Duran early to make an example of him. In doing so, Dirrell would become the first fighter to KO Duran during his 17-year-old pro career.

That would be quite an accomplishment for Dirrell, and a nice feather to put in his cap because Duran has been in with the likes of James Kirkland, David Lopez, Fernando Guerrero, Brandon Gonzales, Latif Mundy, Matt Vanda and Avtandil Khurtsidze, and none of those fighters have been able to get Duran out of there. Of course, none of those guys are even close to being as talented as Dirrell, so that’s a pretty good reason why Duran hasn’t been stopped yet.

Duran fought only once in 2012, beating Joshua Snyder (9-6) by a 6 round unanimous decision. That’s not a good sign going into a fight with Dirrell. Duran hasn’t been fighting enough, and now he’s going to be taking on the toughest opponent of his career at the very worst time when Duran has lost two out of his last three fights.

Dirrell, 29, defeated the hard hitting, steel-chinned Michael Gbenga by a 10 round unanimous decision in his last fight a month ago in McAllen, Texas. Dirrell was fighting for the first time in 14 months, but he looked like he’d never been away, as he was incredibly fast, incredibly sharp and incredibly powerful. Dirrell is one of those guys like Floyd Mayweather Jr. where he can be out of boxing for extended amount of time, and then come back and look like he was never away.
