Diaz: I’ve got power and Khan’s got no chin; it’s a perfect combination

khan54By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF lightweight champion Julio Diaz (40-7-1, 29 KO’s) is ecstatic about getting a high visible fight against former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) on April 27th in a fight that will be televised on Showtime in the United States in front of what could be a huge audience. The fight will be held at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

While Diaz was never considered a huge puncher in the past, he does seem to have picked up a little power as he’s aged a little. At 33, Diaz is sitting down on his shots a little more now, and it’s paid off for him because he’s knocked out three out of his last five opponents he’s faced in the last two years. That’s pretty impressive.

Diaz said to thsun.co.uk “I know the knockout is the only thing that will get me the win…I’m a heavy hitter and he can’t take a punch, so to me that is the perfect combination.”

I think Diaz can probably punch as hard as Breidis Prescott when he loads up on his shots. He’s not naturally strong as Prescott, but when he puts everything he has into his shots, Diaz can throw with Prescott-like power, and we saw what Prescott did to Khan in knocking him out in one round in 2008.

Interestingly enough, Khan never went back for a second helping, and that’s kind of amusing because I’d have to say that most British fighters at least try to avenge their losses. Khan didn’t even try.

It is a perfect combination that Diaz has in this fight. Khan’s chin is definitely brittle, and Diaz has the power to smash it into smithereens if he can get to Khan early enough in the fight. Diaz can’t afford to wait until the later rounds, because he might be too busted up or punch drunk by then to stop Khan with a big shot. Diaz has to do the job early in the fight or not at all.
