Deontay Wilder vs. Audley Harrison possible for Khan-Diaz undercard on April 27th

wilder23By Scott Gilfoid: There’s talk of the talented American heavyweight contender/prospect Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) facing British heavyweight Audley Harrison (31-6, 23 KO’s) on the undercard of the Amir Khan vs. Julio Diaz fight on April 27th at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Golden Boy promotions were hoping to get American Tony Thompson, the fighter that destroyed the UK’s best heavyweight David Price last February, but Thompson is reportedly not excited about getting in the ring with the knockout artist Wilder with his one-punch power.

Harrison, 6’6”, is almost as tall as Wilder, and recently has had a bit of luck in capturing the Prizefighter tournament last month in defeating Claus Bertino, Derric Rossy and Martin Rogan in three fights. Harrison was slender for the tourney and perhaps in the best shape since he captured a gold medal in the 2000 Olympics.

If Harrison is able to go into a fight with Wilder in that kind of shape it could be interesting for a little while at least.

Given Wilder’s huge power, and Harrison’s glass chin, it’s hard to see the British heavyweight lasting more than 1 round against Wilder. The first big right hand that Wilder lands, we’ll likely see Harrison on the canvas badly hurt.

I just hope that Harrison doesn’t freeze up again like he did in his loss to David Price and David Haye. That was awful to look at how terrified Harrison seemed to be.

Harrison and Wilder are familiar with each having sparred while Wilder was getting Harrison ready for his fight against Price. There are rumors that Harrison dropped Wilder in sparring during one of the sessions, but that seems to be a nasty rumor started by one of the anti-Wilder critics trying to get some bad press for this talented fighter.

Harrison will be a good scalp for Wilder to add to his resume to keep him busy while Golden Boy Promotions, his American promoters, look to line Wilder up with a more talented top contender that can put Wilder in line for a title shot against one of the Klitschko brothers.
