Deontay Wilder: I’ll be the next heavyweight champion of the world

wilder2By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (27-0, 27 KO’s) believes he’s on course to become the next heavyweight champion of the world unless somehow IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko is upset in his mismatch on May 4th against Franceso Pianeta in Germany.

Wilder, 6’7”, is in the process of possibly getting a shot against David Price conqueror Tony Thompson after Wilder struck out in attempting to get British heavyweight Tyson Fury to face him.

Wilder said on his social media site, “I’ll float like a butterfly and sting like a bee, [and] definitely no one hits like the Bronze B; the next heavy champ of the world will soon be me.”

It’s not that the talented Wilder can’t be hit because he certainly can. It’s what happens when he hits you back with one of his heat-seeking missile-like right hands is where his opponents have problems. Wilder’s right hand is a game changer, and it doesn’t matter who he’s facing, if they’re not a robot with a steel chin, they’re going down hard.

Thus far, Wilder has only proven himself against mostly lower B to C level opposition. If Golden Boy Promotions can set him up with the 6’5” Tony Thompson, it’ll give Wilder a great opportunity to test out his huge power against a high B level heavyweight. That fight right there will tell boxing fans whether Wilder has the talent to get to the next level or not.

If Wilder has problems with Thompson, then clearly he won’t be ready to take a big step up against one of the Klitschko brothers or one of the top contenders. But if Wilder is able to smash Thompson in a quicker fashion than Wladimir did in stopping him in the 6th round last year then you have to conclude that Wilder is ready to step it up against other world class contenders and the Klitschkos.

You have to remember that a year ago trainer Emanuel Steward said Wilder was one year away from being ready to fight for a world title. Well, here we are a year later, and I think we could see that the boxing genius Steward was right about Wilder in predicting his future.
