De La Hoya: Alvarado vs. Broner anybody?

alvarado33By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions posed a question to his twitter followers last night by asking them if anyone would be interested in seeing unbeaten WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) face the Top Rank promoted Mike Alvarado (34-1, 23 KO’s).
De La Hoya said “Alvarado vs. Broner anybody?”

I’m sure De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions would jump at the chance to make that fight if Alvarado’s promoters at Top Rank were to say yes to the idea of that fight being made. However, Arum likely wouldn’t say yes to such a fight unless Golden Boy was to loan Broner to him for one fight, and ev even then it might not be possible.

I would pick Broner to defeat Alvarado, and possibly stop him the same way that Brandon Rios did. Broner’s defensive skills are much too good for someone like Alvarado, and he’s be able to avoid all those right hands he likes to throw. He’d build on the things that Rios was doing right last Saturday night by using his jab and pressuring Alvarado.

It would be an interesting fight if there were ways somehow to get beyond the Golden Boy – Top Rank cold war, as well as the HBO-Golden Boy freeze.

Alvarado fights on HBO, and Broner is now going to be fighting on Showtime.

Alvarado won’t be fighting anytime soon because he took a real beating in defeating Brandon Rios (33-1-1, 23 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Alvarado was able to nick a close decision by the scores of 115-113, 114-113, and 115-113. Alvarado suffered cuts over both eyes and extensive swelling. He’s probably going to need at least six months at the minimum to heal from the big cut over his left eye. That was an especially bad one.

Broner has a fight coming up on June 22nd against WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi. If Broner wins that fight he’s likely to stay at 147 and defend the title. It would be a perfect opportunity for Alvarado to move up in weight seven pounds and challenger Broner for the WBA title, if Arum would let him.
