David Haye willing to fight for mandatory position to get shot against Klitschkos

haye454By Allan Fox: With the Klitschko brothers having zero interest in facing former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s), it’s pretty clear that the only way Haye will ever be able to get a shot against one of them again is if he fights to become their mandatory challenger rather than continually pleading with them to give him a fight.

Haye, #1 WBA, #4 WBO, #5 WBC, has finally gotten the message that the best way to force the Klitschkos to face him is to fight to become the mandatory for one of them. In doing so they’ll have to agree to fight him, vacate or retire.

Haye would be smart to focus on going after Wladimir because Vitali would likely retire if Haye got to the mandatory position for his trap, and it’ll take at least a year to get there because there are four other heavyweights ranked above him by the World Boxing Council.

According to The Sun, Haye is willing to go down the mandatory route to get a fight with Vitali or Wladimir. Ranked #1 by the WBA, Haye can quickly get a shot against WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin or at least beat the #2 or #3 ranked heavyweights to get locked into the mandatory spot, whatever the WBA wants to make that happen.

Once Haye becomes the mandatory for Wladimir, we’ll see what the big 6’6” Ukrainian does. Seeing how Wladimir has been putting off his fight with Povetkin, we might see Wladimir looking to make further optional defenses like the one he’s taking on May 4th against Francesco Pianeta.

Hopefully, the WBA doesn’t allow Wladimir to do this because the heavyweight division is dying a slow death with Wladimir facing guys like Tony Thompson, Jean Marc Mormeck and Mariusz Wach, and his brother Vitali fighting guys like Albert Sosnowski, Kevin Johnson, and Manuel Charr.

Haye would be a definite improvement over the guys that Wladimir has been padding his record with. It would be a lot more entertaining to see Haye fighting Wladimir repeatedly than seeing Wladimir going into the milking stage where he’s fighting Wach, Pianeta, Mormeck and Thompson.
