By Jim Dower: Fighting for the first time since his loss to Jorge Paez Jr. last July, junior middleweight Omar Chavez (29-2, 22 KO’s) defeated Pablo Vasquez (22-5, 19 KO’s) by a 2nd round TKO on Saturday night at the Arena Foro Tecate, Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Chavez, the son of Mexican boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez, teed off on Vazquez at will, putting him down three times in the second round before the mismatch was stopped at 1:03 of the 2ns round. Chavez came into the fight having lost two out of his last three fights with both losses coming at the hands of Paez Jr.

Chavez doesn’t have the size or the power of his older brother Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. However, he’s been steadily gaining weight since staring his career as a lightweight in 2006. At this pace we could be seeing Chavez in the middleweight division before we know it, although he might seem a little small for that weight class at 5’8”.

On the undercard, lightweight Ricardo Dominguez (37-9-2, 22 KO’s) defeated the hard hitting Al Sabaupan (20-3-1, 15 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision. The final judges’ scores were 97-92, 98-90, 97-91.

Junior middleweight knockout artist Saul Roman (37-9, 30 KO’s) beat Jose Pinzon (22-5, 14 KO’s) by a 9th round TKO. Both fighters hit the canvas multiple times with Roman going down three times and Pinzon twice. The fight was halted after Roman flurried on Pinzon, causing the referee to jump in and halt the fight.
