Canelo-Trout: Less than 2,300 tickets remaining for April 20th fight

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERABy Dan Ambrose: It looks like Golden Boy Promotions and the staff at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas are going to need to restructure the stadium because there reportedly is less than 2,300 tickets remaining for the April 20th unification bout between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) and WBA champ Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s).

Initially they configured the 72,000 Alamodome stadium to fit 30,000 boxing fans for the Canelo-Trout fight, but when 20,000 tickets were quickly scooped up by eager fans jumping at the chance to purchase the low cost $10 and $20 tickets, they quickly restructured the stadium to fit 40,000 fans.

Now, according to Steve Kim, there are less than 2,300 tickets remaining, which means that they’re going to have to structure the stadium from 40,000 to 50,000 fans. I can’t imagine more than 50,000 fans coming to see Canelo fight on April 20th. That’s just too many fans to see a guy that is only 22-years-old, and who hasn’t even faced anyone good at 154.

Trout is going to be Canelo’s first quality junior middleweight he’s faced during his career, and chances are fairly high that Canelo is going to lose that fight. But how can Canelo be selling 40,000 tickets off of victories over Kermit Cintron, 41-year-old Shane Mosley, Matthew Hatton and Alfonso Gomez. Doesn’t Canelo’s fans realize that he still hasn’t faced the best fighters in the 154 pound division yet?

There is exactly one month to go before the Canelo-Trout fight on April 20th, and the tickets for the fight have only been on sale since March 11th of this month. That’s 9 days with close to 40,000 tickets sold.

It’s hard to imagine how many additional tickets will be sold in another 30 days of ticket sales. My guess is pretty much everyone that wants to see the fight has already purchased tickets for it, and there won’t be too many more fans looking to pick up tickets in the next month.
