canelo1(Photos: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: The April 20th unification fight between WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) and WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) promises to be one of biggest boxing events of the year for 2013 when the two fighters face off at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

According to Steve Kim, the gate for the Canelo-Trout fight is already $800,000 and growing with a little over a month to go before the two fighters step inside the ring on April 20th in Texas.

No doubt the huge ticket sales are fueled in part by the low cost $10 tickets that Canelo specifically asked for in order to try and sell out the 72,000 seat stadium. Golden Boy Promotions has retrofitted the stadium for 30,000, but if it were to reach the limit then you could expect it to be resized for however many boxing fans would come to the event.

The point is not to have it looked barren on April 20th, and I think Canelo’s decision to sell the tickets for so cheaply will work in his favor in filling it. Roughly one-third of the tickets are the cheap $10 tickets, so it shouldn’t be hard to draw between 15,000-20,000 fans.

I can’t see it going up to 30,000, but it’s possible. There a lot of Canelo fans from nearby Mexico who think highly of him despite the fact that he’s never proven himself as of yet.

Sadly, the same Trout-Canelo fight would likely draw only 5,000 fans if it were staged in Las Vegas, Nevada, New York or Atlantic City. Golden Boy has made the right decision by staging it on the border of Mexico because that’s where Canelo’s fans are. He hasn’t built up a huge fan base in the United States as of yet, and if he doesn’t beat Trout then it’s possible he never will.

Mexican star Juan Manuel Marquez says he’s not sure who’ll come out on top in this fight.
