austin1(Photos: Stephanie Trapp/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: It looks as if WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) was serious about having a good portion of his tickets priced at only $10 for his April 20th unification bout against WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

According to Dan Rafael, there are 11 thousand tickets priced at $11 per ticket. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says Canelo was the driving force behind wanting the tickets to be sold at such a cheap price because he wanted families in the San Antonio area to be able to afford bringing the entire family to the event instead of just one or two showing up.

Of course, it also makes a ton of sense when you realize the Alamodome seats 72,000 and there’s no way on earth Canelo-Trout would ever come close to selling out a stadium that size. They likely won’t even sell out even one-third [24K] even under the best of circumstances if the tickets were sold at regular priced for the bargain seats.

For that reason it makes a lot of sense for Canelo and Golden Boy to drop the price for the lowest cost tickets from $25 to $10 because more tickets will likely be sold than previously, and they’ll end up making more money in the long run.

Additionally, as I said previously in another article, it’ll give Canelo the appearance that he’s a bigger star if he can pack in as many fans as possible for the Trout fight.

I’m just wondering how many tickets will be given away for free. There’s got to be a certain amount of complimentary tickets handed out to boxing fans to partially fill a stadium that size. My guess it’ll be into the thousands by the time the fight takes place.
