canelo342By Eric Thomas: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) plans on trying to start up negotiations with WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) for a pay-per-view bout on September 14th if the two of them win their next fights.

Canelo faces WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) on April 20th, whereas Mayweather will be battling WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) on May 4th.

Canelo told Steve Kim that they plan on trying to start up talks with Mayweather as soon as the smoke is clear from their fights. If Mayweather says no, Canelo plans on fighting on September 14th against an opponent still to be determined.

If they don’t fight, either Canelo or Mayweather will have to move from the September 14th date because they both won’t be able to share the same spot because they’re both with Showtime, and it’s not likely that Canelo will agree to have his fight televised on the same PPV broadcast as Mayweather’s fight if he fails to agree to fight him.

What Canelo fails to understand is that it’s not in Mayweather’s best interest to fight him, at least not at 154. Mayweather has a huge contract with Showtime/CBS for six fights, and he’s getting $30 million per fight. He doesn’t need Canelo to make huge money, but Canelo definitely needs him if he wants to get a bigger payday then what he’s been getting.

Canelo will likely face Alfredo Angulo on September 14th if he can’t get Mayweather to agree to fight him. Sergio Martinez’s name was mentioned as a possibility for Canelo, but Martinez wants the fight to take place at 160 and on HBO.

Canelo is with Showtime, so that kills the deal before it’s even started. Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will likely be facing each other in November, and that’s a second reason why a Martinez vs. Canelo fight can’t happen.
