Canelo: I’m ready to face Mayweather whenever he wants

floyd17By Dan Ambrose: Some fighters never get a clue, and they end up wasting time instead of focusing on makeable fights. WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez thinks he’s going to get a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September despite Mayweather having already said no to Canelo’s pressure tactics to try and weasel a fight with him.

Canelo said to Ringtv “I’m happy to fight Floyd Mayweather when he’s ready to fight me.”

There’s a real problem with this. Mayweather doesn’t like to face guys that have been exposed. He’ll make an exception every now and then for guys like Miguel Cotto, but it’s rare that he does this. Most of the time Mayweather prefers to be the guy that exposes fighters, because he doesn’t like to get sloppy seconds when it comes to beating a guy.

The main problem for Canelo is he’s got a fight with WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout coming up next month on April 20th, and the chances are that Canelo will taste defeat for the first time in that fight. Now, Canelo can talk Mayweather all he wants, but Mayweather isn’t going to want to fight Trout’s leftovers.

Mayweather wants to be the one that gives a fighter their first defeat, and it’s not probable that he’s going to feel sympathy for Canelo to where he’ll just give him a fight for the sake of being kind.

Do I think Mayweather will fight Canelo someday? Yes, I do. Once Mayweather is down to his sixth fight of his six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS, I think he might fight Canelo at that time, but I think Canelo might have suffered another loss by then if he chooses to fight a rematch against Trout, which is what I think will happen after he gets beaten by him.

Canelo’s ego will likely cause him to make the decision fight Trout again after losing to him, and then we could be seeing Canelo with another defeat. Believe, me, Golden Boy will try to talk Canelo out of facing Trout a second time, but I see Canelo ignoring them and pressing on ahead and taking the fight despite the best wishes of Golden Boy.
