burns32By Scott Gilfoid: The Sun is reporting that WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) has signed up with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sports promotional stable and an announcement will be made on Monday. This likely will lead to a court battle with Burns’ current promoter Frank Warren, as he’s saying he still have a valid contract with Burns.

What this means for Burns’ scheduled April 20th unification bout against IBF champion Miguel Vazquez is still unclear. That might be off if Hearn is able to add Burns to his stable.

Hearn said to I Film London “We’ve got a 2 year contract with Sky. We’re 7 months into the contract now…We’ll announce a new signee on Monday and another on Wednesday or Thursday. I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve got 16 fighters calling me nonstop, and you can’t believe the talent of some of the fighters calling me.”

Kugan Cassius of I Film London attempted to guess the name of the fighter Hearn will be announcing on Wednesday or Thursday by whispering in Hearn’s ear. Hearn said “That person you said, that will be the one after. It’s big, it’s big.”

Hearn went on to say that a lot of the top fighters want to come over to his promotional team because he’s paying them well, and in a timely fashion. He’s not making them wait 3 to 6 months for them to get their pay. He’s also giving them dates on Sky. He says he doesn’t want to take on too many fighters to where he can’t fit them in.

If Burns is one of them then you’d have to assume that Hearn has had someone look over Burns’ contract with Warren carefully to see if it’s valid because otherwise it would be a waste of time to attempt to sign him.
