vera1 - CopyBy Allan Fox: #1 WBO middleweight contender Brian Vera (22-6, 13 KO’s) will be back in the ring against Donatas Bondorovas (17-3-1, 6 KO’s) this Friday night on ESPN2 in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, in Verona, New York, USA.

Vera, 31, is making a quick turnaround as he recently was on ESPN2 in his 10th round TKO victory over former WBO junior middleweight champion Serhiy Dzinziruk in mostly one-sided fight that ended with Vera sending a beaten Dzinziruk to the canvas in the 10th after having trapped him in the corner.

Vera needs to win this fight this Saturday night against the 33-year-old Lithuanian Bondorovas to keep in line for a big fight against either former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. or WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in June. Vera said to Fightnews.com “They’re talking about Chavez Jr. or the Golovkin fight for June, so I’ve got to take care of business.”

Vera should be more than okay in this fight because Bondorovas has faced largely weak opposition his entire 11-year pro career. It’s kind of surprising that ESPN2 is televising this fight because it’s a mismatch on paper, and ESPN2 has been pretty good lately in putting together some good fights that are competitive going in the door. This one isn’t. It’s more like a stay busy fight for Vera because he’s much more experienced than Bondorovas.

Bondorovas has losses to Domonique Dolton, Willie Fortune, and Eric Teymour. There are no recognizable names as far as the guys that Bondorovas has beaten in his career. Bondorovas’ last two wins have come against David Thomas (10-3-2).

Vera will likely land the fight against Chavez Jr. if he looks good in beating Bondorovas. Chavez Jr’s promoter Bob Arum wants to match him against a come forward slugger that won’t make it hard for Chavez Jr. to go looking for him like Sergio Martinez did against him last September. Vera will be right there for Chavez Jr. to slug with, and as big as Vera was against Dzinziruk in his last fight, he’s likely going to be out-weighed by a good 15 pounds by Chavez Jr.
