Bellew vs. Chilemba on 3/30, and Ajisafe on 5/25

bellew45by Scott Gilfoid: WBC Silver light heavyweight champion Tony Bellew (19-1, 12 KO’s) has himself scheduled for two fights instead of just one. Bellew, 30, faces Isaac Chilemba (20-1-1, 9 KO’s) this month on March 30th at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK, and then win or lose, Bellew will return to the ring to face Bob Ajisafe (10-2, 3 KO’s) on May 25th on the undercard of the PPV fight between IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch and WBA champion Mikkel Kessler at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

I can’t quite understand that fight because you’d think that Bellew’s promoter Eddie Hearn at Matchroom Sport at least would have found Bellew a halfway decent opponent given the divisibility of the fight card and all, but it looks like Hearn is scrimping with the undercard fights by putting his Matchroom stable fighters in mismatches against lesser opposition.

I can’t wait to see who Hearn finds for Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves to fight on that card. I bet it’ll be Brian Magee instead of someone really talented like the Dirrell brothers, Thomas Oosthuizen, Sakio Bika or Peter Quillin. Oh boy, what an undercard this is going to be. Not.

Bellew is going to be down in the dumps for his fight against Ajisafe on May 25th unless he can get past Chilemba this month in Liverpool. This is a going to be a really tough fight for Bellew because Chilemba has a great chin, and he’s not three inches shorter than Bellew like one of Bellew’s recent opponents, and he’s not someone that just stands there throwing jabs for 12 rounds like Roberto Bolonti did against Bellew last November.

Chilemba is going to be bringing his power to the fight and looking to put Bellew on the canvas like Ovil McKenzie did in 2010. It’s going to be interesting to see how Bellew reacts in facing someone that is trying to hit him back instead of just standing on the outside doing nothing for 12 rounds.
