Andre Ward: I am not calling out Floyd Mayweather Jr

ward643By Chris Williams: WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward says he has zero interest in fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr, and he’s not calling him out in any way, shape or form. Ward and Mayweather have been going back and forth for the past couple of weeks ever since Ward said he was pulling for his friend WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero to beat Mayweather Jr. in their fight on May 4th.

Although Mayweather didn’t say this was something that upset him, it kind of seems that way, as he struck back a number of times in interviews with Fighthype.com, saying that Ward can’t draw fans outside of his home base in Oakland, California, and even saying that Ward isn’t even as popular as the 23-year-old WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner.

Mayweather Jr. says Ward is going about building himself the wrong way, which has stifled his popularity. Mayweather volunteered to help Ward by giving him directions in how to make himself more popular.

Ward said to Fighthype.com “I’ve been in boxing a long time and rule number 1 is you don’t call somebody out that’s three weight classes lower than you.”

That makes a lot of sense because it would be crazy to expect Mayweather to move up three divisions to make that right happen. We just saw how ineffective WBC light heavyweight division Chad Dawson was in moving down in weight to fight Ward last September.

Mayweather thinks Dawson should have never agreed to do that because he gave up too much making that fight. Mayweather thinks Dawson should have stayed at his own weight instead for that fight to happen.

Ward is in the process of rehabbing his right shoulder that was recently operated on. Once it’s healed, he’s going to need to start looking around to find some guys that are interested in fighting him. The two top names in the super middleweight division – Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler – are currently fighting each other on May 25th, and there’s questions whether the winner will agree to fight Ward after that given that both guys were already beaten soundly by him in the Super Six tournament.
