By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been rumored to be making an announcement on Super Bowl Sunday about his next opponent for May 4th. It’s been said that Mayweather will be doing this in order to take advantage of the huge attention between the NFL football game between the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens in New Orleans.
I’m not sure how Mayweather would be able to use this to his advantage unless he gets television time on the network carrying the 49ers-Ravens game and possibly announces it during halftime in front of millions. Short of that, I think it would be a bad idea because the attention that he needs for the fight will get drowned out by that game. Those are football fans, not necessarily fans of boxing.
It’s expected that Mayweather Jr. will choose WBC interim welterweight champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) to fight instead of the tougher WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
Mayweather recently said that it’s just a rumor about him fighting Guerrero, but obviously it’s in his best interest to keep it a secret until he announces it because the way he reveals the fight could help make the fight successful if he’s able to get a lot of attention in the media.
I don’t think a fight against Guerrero is going to be a big enough fight for Mayweather to bring in the huge PPV numbers. I don’t even think a fight between Mayweather and Canelo would be a huge fight due to Canelo’s lack of high level competition during his career. Golden Boy Promotions has done such a good job of matching Canelo weak that it’s stunted his ability to win over the U.S boxing fans.
If the television stations that are carrying the 49ers-Ravens game tomorrow let make an announcement during halftime.
