The talk in the boxing world is that after Floyd Mayweather defeats his opponent on May 4th in Las Vegas, Nevada, will be facing Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on Mexican Independence Day weekend in September. This would be a huge fight involving two of the biggest pay-per-view stars in boxing and may even break the pay-per-view record currently held by Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya. But what has Alvarez accomplished in boxing to deserve such a big fight?
Canelo failed to make the contracted weight when he won the WBC title against Matthew Hatton, who was a welterweight for most of his career. Canelo then defended against Ryan Rhodes, Alfonso Gomez, Kermit Cintron and a faded Shane Mosley. With the exception of Cintron and Mosley, none of these fighters have accomplished anything at world level.
Let’s not forget Alvarez’s last fight against Josesito Lopez who was a 140 pound fighter for most of his career and somehow secured a shot at Alvarez by beating Victor Ortiz. If Alvarez thinks he deserves a fight with Mayweather then he has to start facing some of the ranked fighters in his division. Fighters such as Alfredo Angulo, James Kirkland, Erislandy Lara and Austin Trout are all dangerous fighters who could expose any potential flaws in Alvarez’s game.
However, this is unlikely to happen as Golden Boy Promotions would likely not risk their main pay-per-view draw and a big fight with Mayweather by making fights which could make Alvarez look bad. Alvarez has good skills, power and technique but he has to be put in fights were his stamina, will to win and ability to take punches are tested.
Lot’s of young fighters in the past have been hyped as future superstars but when the time came to perform at the highest level they failed and were exposed. Alvarez has to be put in difficult fights were he has to answer those questions and if he is able to do that then he will be deserving of the big fight between himself and Mayweather.
