What does Sergio Martinez and Peter Quillin bring to the table?

martinez452By Robert Elmore: It’s funny when a fighter who isn’t a household name, doesn’t fill arenas every time they fight, doesn’t give his opponent at least a satisfying pay day, tells his opponent that he needs to get all these for a fight to happen when they don’t even have these things themselves. But these are the legs that WBO champion Peter Quillin and WBC champion Sergio Martinez are standing on. Earlier last week Sergio’s promoter told espn.go that Gennady doesn’t bring in a dime.

But what money or crowd does Quillin or Martinez pull in? Let’s start with Martinez.

Simply put, Sergio is trying to cash out before he retires. But as of late is looks like Lou Di Bella is cutting off every options that could probably bring in some good cash? That problem can be solved by unifying the division or move up to the super middleweight division. But Sampson Lewkowicz, Sergio adviser has already stated that’s not going to happen because Sergio is “too small” for that division. They are not going to unify the division. So what’s left?

They are talking about a rematch with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. But what if that fight doesn’t come off? What then? My problem with Di Bella’s comment is that Sergio is no more known than Gennady Golovkin, Daniel Geale, or Peter Quillin. The way Lou is talking one would think that Martinez is filling 10,000 plus seat arenas, doing big pay per view numbers, and giving opponents their highest pay days. But he’s not. His victories over Paul Williams and Kelly Pavlik were good, but neither are elite fighters. Their resumes are not decorated with elite fighters. The onetime Pavlik faced an elite fight, Bernard Hopkins, he was badly exposed.

Team Sergio can forget about a fight with Floyd Mayweather. That fight won’t happen for the same reasons that Di Bella said about Gennady; Sergio doesn’t bring in a dime. On a side note, Saul Alvarez doesn’t deserve a shot either, but because of his fan base, that fight would come off because of the financial reward that Alvarez brings. Now back to my point. Since Gennady nor Martinez have a huge following or generating mega bucks, put the fight in either in Argentina or Germany. I’m sure HBO would pick up that unification bout. It could benefit both fighters. After all isn’t Sergio fighting an unknown Martin Murray in Argentina to be televised on HBO? And Peter Quillin…..

Quillin is only 29 years old and still has a chance to make some noise in the division. The only big name on his resume is Ronald “Winky” Wright. But Wright had been out of the ring a very long time. He told fight hype on January 25th “that he has a team of people gonna advise me that he’s really not known in the U.S. They say this guy won’t generate money”. He went on to ask Why would I aim for a regular champion like Gennady when (Daniel) Geale is the super champion”? Again, what arena has Quillin filled? What money has he generated? Before the Danny Garcia/Zab Judah fight was rescheduled, wasn’t Quillin fighting on the undercard? This wasn’t a co-main event. Quillin is fighting Fernando Guerrero who was beaten by the reality show The Contender winner Grady Brewer and has fought four less than stellar opponents since.

So while Martinez and Quillin are good fighters, they need to put cheeks-in-seats, generate big bucks themselves before they begin talking about what another fighter doesn’t bring in.
