Warren wants Burns vs. Broner

burns35By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns’ promoter Frank Warren says he’d like to make a fight between Burns and the American talent WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner if Burns can get past his next fight against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez on March 16th. That’s going to be a tough fight, and I can see Vazquez winning that one and ruining Warren’s plans for a Burns-Broner fight.

Warren said in his column frankwarrentv.com “Ricky prevails in his pending tough unification bout against Mexico’s IBF box Miguel Vasquez at Wembley Arena on 16th March, I’ll be uprooting trees to broker a GB-USA super fight to determine top dog at 135lbs before the year is through and I’ll be backing Ricky, no ‘Problem.”

Well, I hope Burns gets past Vazquez so that this fight can happen. However, Warren is going to have to put a strong effort to make the fight because Burns has chosen to do other things when he’s had offers from Broner to fight him in the past. There won’t be any more offers from Broner if Burns doesn’t accept the fight this time, as Broner said he’s going to move up to 140 lbs and go after the top names in that division.

Broner isn’t going to wait around to fight an arguably lesser name like Burns when he has the opportunity to fight guys like Amir Khan, Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse and Lamont Peterson at light welterweight. Those are guys that will help make Broner a star. You can’t say the same for a fight against Burns. That’s like Broner vs. Rees part 2. Burns is just another Rees, except he likes to hold to escape punishment.

It’s not going to be a competitive fight, and it honestly isn’t worth the trouble that will go into putting the fight together. If the fight doesn’t happen easily, and I don’t expect it will, Broner needs to move on and never look back. He’s got bigger and better things to do than to fight a guy like Burns that’s known to casual boxing fans in the U.S. Broner should just let Burns continue to fight the Kevin Mitchell’s and Nicky Cooks in the UK for the remainder of his career, while Broner moves on to greatness at 140 and 147.
