By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye can finally retire because WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (45-2, 41 KO’s) says Haye had his chance to fight him and he failed to take it. Vitali is moving on.
Speaking with boxingnews.ua, Vitali said “David Haye was able to fight me on 10 September 2012 in Moscow. He was sent to all contracts. The Briton only had to sign them. David refused. The David Haye train has left.”
Well, there it is. That’s the news that Haye needed to finally retire from boxing because Vitali is saying Haye had his chance to take the fight and failed to sign the contract. Why he failed to sign is anyone’s guess. Who knows? Maybe Haye thought he was going to get another chance, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen based on Vitali’s wording.
Haye now can retire happily, and know that he tried but failed to get the fight. I hope Haye doesn’t keep badgering Vitali because he needs to realize what Vitali is saying. Haye the chance and didn’t put his John Hancock on the dotted line to get the fight with Vitali, so the now the big 6’7” Ukrainian is moving on to bigger and better things.
I’m not sure whether Vitali will be retiring or now, but whatever he decides it’s all good for him. He’s got a great political career, and if he wants to keep fighting then he has his pick of whoever he wants to fight in the division. But believe me, if Vitali sends a contract to one of the contenders, you can bet they’re going to sign it immediately and send it right back. They’re not going to want to blow that nice payday to fight the giant Ukrainian. Now why didn’t Haye do that?
