Victor Ortiz: I’ll KO Amir Khan when he gives me a shot

ortiz4By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) believes he’ll KO former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan when he eventually moves up in weight to the welterweight division in the future. Khan is already ranked #2 by the WBC at 147, so he’s already been given a welcome mat for him to move up to 147.

Ortiz said on his twitter in response to being asked ‘when is he going to KO Khan,’ “When he gives me a shot.”

A Khan vs. Ortiz fight will likely be one of the first fights that Golden Boy Promotions sets Khan up with when he moves up to 147. If Khan can’t pass test against the 26-year-old Ortiz, which I don’t think he can, he’ll have little choice but to move back down to 140 to continue as a light welterweight. Ortiz is someone that has a lot of hand speed and power, and I think Khan will be in a lot of trouble in a fight like that.

Ortiz hasn’t been doing too well as of late having lost his last two fights to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Josesito Lopez. The loss to Lopez last June can partly be explained away by Ortiz having suffered a broken jaw, but Ortiz never really did look good in that fight even before the injury took place.

Lopez was doing a good job of going toe-to-toe with Ortiz, and I don’t think Ortiz was really ready mentally for such a tough fight. Ortiz is one of those types of fighters that either looks really good or he looks bad. His loss to Lopez was one of his off performances.

Ortiz has better power and hand speed than Danny Garcia. If Khan couldn’t handle the power from Garcia, then I don’t think he’d be able to live with Ortiz for very long without getting knocked out.

Golden Boy Promotions would be taking a huge risk with Khan if they dared to put him in with Ortiz because there so many chances for this to go wrong for Khan. Ortiz can be a brute when he’s fighting with motivation and Khan would have to take some monstrous shots in order to win this fight, and unlike Marcos Maidana, Ortiz has excellent hand speed.
