Trout may need a KO to beat Canelo on April 20th

trout3By Dan Ambrose: One of the negative aspects of the fight between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and WBA Champ Austin Trout being moved from the May 4th fight card in Las Vegas, Nevada to the Astrodome in San Antonio, Texas on April 20th is that Trout may need a knockout to ensure he wins the fight.

The Astrodome has a seating capacity of 72,000, and I expect that they could have a crowd of 30,000+ Canelo fans that will be cheering for everything he does in the fight while ignoring everything that Trout does.

Knowing how judges are often influenced by crowd noise, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that we could see a lot of rounds going to Canelo where he was actually getting totally dominated. I hope the judges are wise enough to shut out the crowd because it would be such a pity if they give the decision to the wrong man on April 20th. The bad part about it for Trout is he doesn’t have the kind of power to KO most of his opponents, least of all a guy with a tough chin like the 22-year-old Canelo.

What this means for Trout is that he’s going to have to really put it on Canelo and give him a real beating in order to make sure he gets win. It’s not enough that Trout moves around the ring jabbing Canelo in the head and nailing him at will with left hands, he’s going to have to step up the heat with his offense to really give Canelo a pounding if he wants to make sure that he gets out of San Antonio with a victory on this fight.

What’s going to be interesting is to see how many boxing fans show up for this fight. It’ll be a real test to see how popular Canelo is. If Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is able to fight in front of huge crowds of 30,000 while fighting in San Antonio then you can expect that Canelo will draw possibly the same if not more.
