canelo222By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says Floyd Mayweather Jr. DOES have interest in facing WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in the future, but he’s just not interested in signing a contract to fight him right now with an important bout against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero looming ahead on May 4th. Mayweather wants to focus 100% on that fight and then see where he’s afterwards.

Schaefer said to Yahoo Sports News “Floyd told us he didn’t have a problem fighting Canelo, but he wasn’t going to sign anything now. He said ‘All of my focus is on Guerrero,’ and I’m not signing anything to fight anybody until after that fight is over.’”

That does make a lot sense because how can Mayweather sign a contract for a fight against Canelo when he doesn’t even know what’s going to happen in his fight with Guerrero. It’s the smart move for Mayweather because he might struggle against Guerrero or even possibly lose the fight.

The last thing Mayweather needs is to sign for a fight against what many boxing fans feel is an even better fighter than Guerrero in the young 22-year-old Canelo. That would be a foolish move on Mayweather’s part because he needs to be wise about how he plans his six fights with Showtime/CBS.

If Mayweather struggles to beat Guerrero, then he needs to push the Canelo fight to the back of the list so that he’s the last fight of the six-fight contract. It’s about being smart. I don’t think Mayweather will have any problems beating the 22-year-old Canelo, but you don’t want Mayweather to take any chances until he knows where he’s at physically. You have to remember that Mayweather hasn’t fought since last year in May in a hard-fought bout against Miguel Cotto. Mayweather won the fight by a 12 round unanimous decision, but that was a really difficult fight for him. If he looks even worse against Guerrero, then the
