Saul Alvarez could put Golden Boy in a bad position if he loses or struggles against Trout

alvarez5By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions wants to match their budding star WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) with Floyd Mayweather Jr. this year in September.

You can say that Golden Boy has been preparing the 22-year-old Alvarez for this moment since they first started promoting him by keeping him unbeaten by matching him against the perfect opponents for him to keep winning.

There hasn’t been opponent that Canelo has faced that wasn’t over-matched from the jump. Right now there’s a good possibility that Canelo will be facing WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout on May 4th at the MGM Grand on the Mayweather Jr. card in Las Vegas, Nevada.

If Canelo takes that fight and loses or struggles badly in winning a controversial decision, it’s going to put Golden Boy in the position of deciding whether to still try and match Canelo with Mayweather in September or to hold off and wait until Canelo has redeemed himself by beating a quality opponent.

I don’t think there will be a quality opponent for Canelo if he loses to Trout. What we’ll likely see is Golden Boy going back to their habit of matching canelo with welterweights or light welterweights to keep him looking good against smaller opposition.

If Golden Boy decides to go ahead and ramrod Canelo straight through by putting him in with Mayweather anyway following a loss or controversial win, then it’s going to make them all look bad.

Canelo needs to win and win impressive against Trout because anything short of that is going to create a stink that’s going to stick to Canelo like glue as he’s shuffled forward to fight Mayweather.

The problem Golden Boy has with Canelo is he’s so flat-footed, and that’s going to cause him problems against Trout. Canelo also poor conditioning, and if a fight with Trout goes more than six rounds, you can bet Canelo will turn red-faced and start to gasp for air. Trout has great stamina, and he’s going to make Canelo look bad in the last six rounds of the fight.
