broner888By Scott Gilfoid: Gavin Rees’ promoter Eddie Hearn is confident that Rees will be getting another world title shot by the end of 2013 against one of the lightweight champions. Hearn says Rees will be back in the United States fighting because they were so impressed with his performance in getting stopped in the 5th round last Saturday night by WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner on HBO television.

Hearn said to Sky Sports “Gavin’s performance won him many admirers in America. He is a true warrior and we have already been approached about further fights in the U.S in early summer…the plan is to pick up another world title shot before the end of 2013.”

Hearn said to I Film London “We’ll have one more fight in the UK, we’ll be back for a world title.”

This is interesting. I wonder who Rees, #2 WBA, #5 WBO, will be fighting for a world title in 2013. You’ve got to figure it’ll be WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns if he gets past IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez next month. That would give Burns two titles, while the others would be held by Broner [WBC] and the winner of the Sharif Bogere vs. Richard Abril for the WBA strap.

The only realistic option for Rees to be fighting for a world title is Burns unless Vazquez beats him, and Hearn can lure him over to the UK to fight Rees. I suppose Hearn could lure the Abril-Bogere over to the UK as well to fight Rees if he makes a sweet offer.

I mean, you have to realize that these guys don’t make the huge money that you see fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao making, so Hearn could definitely get one of them over to fight Rees in the UK by the end of the year if he throws some money at them. Would be it be worth it? I don’t know if Rees is a big enough ticket seller to make it worthwhile.

It might not be a huge seller having Rees fight the likes of Abril, Bogere or Vazquez in the UK unless they stage it in Wales. If Burns beats Vazquez, then a fight between Rees and Burns is a no-brainer for the end of the year because I don’t see Burns’ team ever agreeing to let him fight Broner, so Rees would be perfect for Burns.

It would be kind of off putting to see Rees back in fighting for a world title if he doesn’t face anyone of quality in between. If Rees just blasts out a domestic level fighter like Derry Mathews again, and then is given another title shot at the end of the year, the I think that’s not exactly interesting.
