Rees: I’m confident I’ll beat Broner

rees45By Scott Gilfoid: Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KO’s) will be looking to take WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner’s title on February 16th. Rees has seen something in Broner’s style that leads him to believe that he’s going to be able to beat him in this fight, and walk out of the Boardwalk Hall with his World Boxing Council strap on February 16th.

Rees said to RingTV “I’m fully confident in a victory. I’m a massive underdog on the odds but we don’t see it like that. I’m coming over here to win.”

Well, I sure hope Rees raises his game from the one I saw from him in his two fights against Derry Matthews in the last two years because the Rees that I saw in that fight wouldn’t beat Broner’s recent victims Antonio DeMarco, Vincente Escobedo or Jason Litzau.

Rees looks like a step down from those guys, and I really wonder what Golden Boy Promotions is thinking by having Broner face an over-matched opponent like Rees. Well, actually I have a pretty good idea why Golden Boy hand-picked Rees from the pile of lightweights to put in with Rees.

Golden Boy is trying to branch out to the UK, and by having their young star Broner face some of the Brits, it could help ease their way in this lucrative market. To be sure, it’s not the same as the huge Chinese market that Top Rank is trying to move into, but it’s definitely a rich one for Golden Boy.

If they can keep Broner and some of their other Golden Boy fighters facing Brits, then it could open some doors for themselves. Unfortunately, it’s not a good deal for American boxing fans that have to sit through these god awful mismatches because Rees is going to look like someone that wondered into the ring from the crowd when he steps inside the ring to face Broner on February 16th in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Rees is going to take a beating in this fight and that’s all you can really say about that. Golden Boy next wants to have Broner face Scotland’s WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns in a fight that could take place in the summer if Burns will agree to take the fight, which I seriously doubt that he will.

Broner will destroy Burns as easy as he will Rees, but the fight will likely help Golden Boy in getting into the UK markets.
