Mosley: Golovkin & Marvilla are too big for Canelo

martinez7 - CopyBy Dan Ambrose: “Sugar” Shane Mosley doesn’t think WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has the size to compete against the likes of WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.

Mosley, who lost to Canelo last year by a 12 round unanimous decision, says he doesn’t see Canelo as a big 154 pound fighter. He sees him as small for that weight class, and he doesn’t like his chances against the bigger Martinez and Golovkin if those fights were made.

Mosley said to esnewsreporting.com “Gennady might be a little too big for Canelo. He’s too tall too. He’s too big. Canelo is 147-154, but he’s 154 solid. He [Gennady] might be a little too big for Canelo. Again, he’s [Sergio Martinez] too big for Canelo. Canelo’s my height, maybe a little shorter. Those guys are big, real 160 pounders. [At] 154, Canelo is solid, but he’s kind of small for that weight.”

Mosley would know how Canelo would do against Golovkin because Mosley sparred Golovkin not long ago, and he got a feel for his power during that sparring sessions. Mosley was beaten pretty soundly by Canelo a year ago, but Canelo couldn’t really hurt him.

In the sparring session between Golovkin and Mosley, Golovkin was stalking Mosley all around the ring, tagging him with hard right hands and left hooks. You can only imagine what it would have been like had it been a real fight with lighter gloves and without the head gear.

Golovkin and Canelo reportedly sparred together in the past, and there’s talk that Golovkin dominated him during the session. That kind of tells you all you need to know about what would happen if the two of them were to fight. Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions likely won’t ever allow him to fight someone like Golovkin because he’s too dangerous and would have a good chance of knocking Canelo out.

A fight between Canelo and Sergio Martinez would likely be the same. Martinez is a lot faster than Canelo, he hits harder and he moves a lot better. Canelo hasn’t faced any real punchers during his career, and if you put him in with Sergio it might be a real shock to him. At any rate, I wouldn’t like Canelo’s chances of surviving the full 12 rounds. Golden Boy has been taking it easy with Canelo, and they much be matching him carefully for a reason.

Mosley says he’d like to see Canelo and Manny Pacquiao go at it. Unfortunately, this isn’t a fight that can be put together due to Pacquiao being promoted by Top Rank, and Canelo with Golden Boy.
